Serena Williams has now secured her place in the women’s US Open single final after her 6-3, 6-2 win over Dinara Safina. Serena has been tipped all the way through the event as the strongest player in the running, but she faces tough competition in the form of the other finalist, the Serbian star Jelena Jankovic, who beat the current Olympic champion Elena Dementieva 6-4, 6-4. However Saturday night’s final is looking set for some unpredictable weather as the Tropical Storm Hanna hovers on the horizon, and the US Open organizers have been making contingency plans in case the final needs to be postponed.
Also in deference to the approaching weather front the men’s semifinal between Roger Federer and the No. 3 Novak Djokovic is being held an hour earlier than originally planned, with the second semifinal between the Top-seed Rafael Nadal and No. 6 Andy Murray following close after. For the first time in some years Federer will be entering the US Open semifinal without having won any major championships yet that season, and also without the No 1 seed position next to his name.
Rafael Nadal, the current No 1 will be battling it out with the Scot Andy Murray, who will be appearing in his first Grand Slam semifinal. Murray has yet to defeat Nadal, having lost three matches already to him this season, but as he has already made the semifinal he will be guaranteed at least the No 4 slot whatever the outcome. Nadal is the solid favorite, having blazed his way through an impressive season this year and is also the current Olympic champion, claiming gold in the recent Beijing Games. Although the first prize at the US Open is $1.5 million, Nadal stands to earn an additional bonus of $1 million if he manages a victory, as he also recently triumphed at the U.S. Open Series, previous to this event. There will be lots of excitement to watch US open finals this time. If you are thinking of betting for this or other events, get some free bets.

The US Open tennis tournament is held every year, over a two week period at the end of August/beginning September. It is one of the longest running tennis tournaments in the world, going back as far as 1881. The tournament has five different championships, the men and women’s singles and doubles, and also the mixed doubles, and since 1978 the matches have been played on the Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre in New York City, on a fast, acrylic hard court. This tournament differs slightly from the other Grand Slam events, in that final set tiebreaks are allowed. In the other events, the final set for both the men and women the match continues until someone wins by two games.
The US Open became the first Grand Slam event to install the Hawk Eye system (multiple high-speed video recording) in 2006, which allowed each player two challenges against the umpire and linesman’s calls. The success of this system has led to the allowance being increased to three challenges for the 2008 event, plus an extra challenge in a tiebreak situation.
This year’s tournament is now well under way, and US Open live broadcasts are being shown across the US television networks, and also some cable and satellite channels such as Eurosport. This year’s prize money is set at an impressive $1,500,000 for the winner (both men and women’s singles) and $750,000 for the runner up. There is also the option for the top three finalists to win a bonus prize, if they also came top in the previous Olympus US Open Series. If the winners of the Olympus series singles tournaments also win the US open singles, they each could take home a bonus of a further $1 million dollars.
The latest news from the 2008 US Open singles event is that the 2000 US Open Women’s Champion Lindsay Davenport, has knocked out Alisa Kleybanova to go through into the third round and Novak Djokovic, the No 3 seed and last year’s US Open runner-up has knocked out Arnaud Clement in straight sets, despite slightly twisting his ankle during play.

With the NFL season fast approaching you might be looking for some expert advice on how this season is going to turn out. Jimmy Boyd of Locksmith Sports is a football handicapping expert who provides weekly
football picks to his clients in order to help them beat the spreads for both pro and college football.
If you are having trouble beating the NCAA or NFL odds, take a look at what he has to offer.
Division winners:
NFC North – Minnesota Vikings – Adrian Peterson is a force on offense and the
addition of Jared Allen on defense makes this the team to beat.
NFC South – New Orleans Saints – We think this is the clear cut favorite after a
down 2007 season.
NFC East – New York Giants – It’s tough for us to go against the Super Bowl
champs here, even though the Cowboys and Eagles will be tough to turn away.
NFC West – Seattle Seahawks – They have owned the division in recent years, and
we don’t see anyone stopping them from capturing their fifth straight.
AFC North – Cleveland Browns – Last year wasn’t a fluke, this is the new team
to beat in the North.
AFC South -Indianapolis Colts – Six straight division titles is in the near
future for Manning and company.
AFC East – New England Patriots – If you doubt the Patriots this year, then you
are either crazy or just plain dumb.
AFC West – San Diego Chargers – This is the most talented team in the AFC, with
Pro Bowlers up and down both sides of the ball. We think this is the early
favorite to win the Super Bowl.
Hope the site will help you to get the best picks.

The first Olympic mascot appeared at the 1972 Munich games, and since then they have become a key component of the Olympic image. These mascots visually represent the vitality of the games and also the individuality of the hosting nation, and also remind everyone of the fun, festive background to the games, amidst all the serious competitiveness.
Whatever shape the Olympic mascots have taken they usually aim to convey the theme of that particular games, and translate to the world some of the diverse geography, history and culture of the host country and also the host city. The first mascot in 1972 was called ‘Waldi the dachshund’ and represented the key attributes that embody the Olympic athlete, resistance, tenacity and agility. He was shown dressed in bright colors, to express the joy of this great Olympic event.
This years 2008 Beijing Games have 5 mascots, the Fuwa, drawing their inspiration from the Five Olympic Rings. They are intended to carry a message of good wishes and good luck from China to the rest of the world, and the first four take their images from China’s most popular and lucky animals, Beibei the fish, Jingjing the panda, Yingying the Tibetan antelope, and Nini the swallow. The fifth mascot is meant to represent the Olympic Flame and is called Huanhuan. The clever part is that when all the first sections of the names are read together they say “Bei Jing Huan Ying Ni” which means “Welcome to Beijing”. These mascots also show performance in live olympics before and after few events. You must have seen them doing gymnastic performance before athletic events, dressed with this same mascots.

The Fuwa mascots also aim to embody the landscape and spirit of the vast nation of China, and each mascot represents the five main elements of nature, sea, forest, earth, sky and fire. Symbols and signs are traditionally used in China to spread good luck, and the mascots are utilized in this way also. Fish and water symbols carry the message of prosperity; the panda represents happiness and harmony in nature, the antelope is swift and can cover long distances and so represents the vastness of China and the swallow represents the spread of good luck as it flies across the world. Also the word swallow is “yan” in Chinese, and Yanying was the ancient name for Beijing. Huanhuan is the main mascot and embraces the vitality and undying passion of the Olympic Spirit, and also the warmth of the blessing wished by the people of China to the rest of the world.
