US Open 2008 Updates
Sep 7th, 2008 by Admin
Serena Williams has now secured her place in the women’s US Open single final after her 6-3, 6-2 win over Dinara Safina. Serena has been tipped all the way through the event as the strongest player in the running, but she faces tough competition in the form of the other finalist, the Serbian star Jelena Jankovic, who beat the current Olympic champion Elena Dementieva 6-4, 6-4. However Saturday night’s final is looking set for some unpredictable weather as the Tropical Storm Hanna hovers on the horizon, and the US Open organizers have been making contingency plans in case the final needs to be postponed.
Also in deference to the approaching weather front the men’s semifinal between Roger Federer and the No. 3 Novak Djokovic is being held an hour earlier than originally planned, with the second semifinal between the Top-seed Rafael Nadal and No. 6 Andy Murray following close after. For the first time in some years Federer will be entering the US Open semifinal without having won any major championships yet that season, and also without the No 1 seed position next to his name.
Rafael Nadal, the current No 1 will be battling it out with the Scot Andy Murray, who will be appearing in his first Grand Slam semifinal. Murray has yet to defeat Nadal, having lost three matches already to him this season, but as he has already made the semifinal he will be guaranteed at least the No 4 slot whatever the outcome. Nadal is the solid favorite, having blazed his way through an impressive season this year and is also the current Olympic champion, claiming gold in the recent Beijing Games. Although the first prize at the US Open is $1.5 million, Nadal stands to earn an additional bonus of $1 million if he manages a victory, as he also recently triumphed at the U.S. Open Series, previous to this event. There will be lots of excitement to watch US open finals this time. If you are thinking of betting for this or other events, get some free bets. ![]()
